The Egg McMuffin is McDonald's premier breakfast sandwich, developed in 1972 by McDonald's restaurant franchisee Herb Peterson. who developed the sandwich it at his McDonald's location in Santa Barbara, California. This was probably in response to the JackInTheBox chain's release of the Breakfast Jack in 1969, itself also influenced by the dish eggs Benedict.

About the sandwich

It is actually quite simple, consisting of a Hard poached egg and one slice each of American cheese and Canadian bacon served on a toasted English muffin. The cook uses a system of small teflon coated metal collars to confine the eggs while they're being cooked. There is some kind of margarine or butter.
